  • For a long time, doctors have used self-fat transplants for breast augmentation surgery.
  • However, minute calcification was discovered on the radiology examination caused by necrosis of the transplanted fat. As a result, the use of fat transplantation is starting to gain attention again.
Strengths and weaknesses of breast augmentation through self-fat breast augmentation surgery
    • Strengths
      • • Due to inserting absorbed one’s own fat such as abdomen, thigh, buttocks etc to breast, so it is effective to correct figure of the part which was absorbed fats
      • • The feel of breasts is soft and natural.
      • • There is no complication due to implants. (capsular contracture, damage of implants, abrasion, feel of breasts)
    • Weaknesses
      • • There is a limitation in the amount of transplantation of fat possible at one time.
      • • Some of the fat could be absorbed, so sometimes it may be necessary to get additional surgical procedures.
      • • It is hard to create sufficiently projected breast shape.
      • • Due to necrosis of transplanted fat, lumps could form or calcification could appear on radiology examinations, which needs to be distinguished from breast cancer. (When needed, MRI or biopsy may be required)

Breast augmentation surgery through stem cell transplantation of fat
  • Recently, it was discovered that general fat tissue includes lots of adult stem cells, so a method to increase the amount of fat cells and survival rate of transplanted fat at the same time by inducing creation of new blood was attempted. This was done by inserting adult stem cells, collected from fat tissue, into the breast by mixing adult stem cells with the fat cells to be transplanted.
    In addition, by mixing platelet rich plasma with the fat to be transplanted, the survival rate of transplanted fat is increased. They have high rates of division and are extremely sensitive, so they are difficult to control. This instability could result in the growth of a tumor, and therefore raises many legal and ethical issues.

They have a tendency to differentiate into specific tissue in a controlled environment, so it is easy to control medically and has been getting a lot of attention recently.
    Adult stem cells, collected from bone marrow, are used in the treatment of hematological cancer already. Research has revealed the many benefits of these stem cells, but the problem is that the amount that can be collected is small, and surgery is painful and requires expensive facilities.
    However, the recent discovery of cells in fat tissue, which have the same characteristics of stem cells, has caused a commotion in the academic world. When collecting stem cells from fat tissue, it is possible to extract large amounts at one time through a relatively easy process and at a low cost. This stem cell from fat has been revealed to help in the survival of fat cells that have been transplanted.
    Until now, fat transplantation surgery has only been performed in the enhancement of beauty, but in near future, it is expected that fat transplantation will be performed for cell treatment of various diseases.
